Chera Pahanra (Mopping the Chariot Platform)
Chera Pahara - the Ceremonial Sweeping is the most significant ritual associated with the Ratha-Yatra. . During the festival, the Gajapati King wears the outfit of a sweeper and sweeps all around the deities and chariots in the Chera Pahara (sweeping with water) ritual. He cleanses the road with a broom (gold-handled) and sprinkles sandalwood water and powder. His action bridges the gap between the rich and the poor, the low caste and the high caste and sends out the very important message of dignity of labour.
This ritual signified that under the lordship of Jagannath, there is no distinction between the powerful sovereign Gajapati King and the most humble devotee. Chera Pahara conveys the message that every individual is equal for Lord Jagannath, no matter he/she is rich or poor. In today’s context the person who performs Chera Pahara is considered to be the really blessed ones.
It is because King of Puri is regarded as Vishnu and to witness the king along with Lord Jagannath on chariots is believed that all sins of a devotee are washed away.
The minimum pledge amount of $1000.
